Tragedy averted--prayer of thanks

I take it for granted. Every day we pray that we will be protected from harm and I suppose if we knew every day how often that prayer was answered, we might walk around a little bit nervous. My two oldest boys who are still within reach, one at college nearby, and one at home, took a friend to the airport today. We live 3 1/2 hrs from the airport, so it is quite the trip. They left at 7am and had been up late last night.

On the way home, the younger brother slept, and the older brother driving, joined him. When he awoke, he was in the wrong lane and the other vehicle way laying on the horn. As a mother, you don't even want to allow the what if thought in. But I could surely imagine a phone call informing us of an accident. Well instead, I am so grateful that they came home safe and sound and that the older brother warmed up for a basketball game tonight, instead of being visited in a hospital or worse. The younger brother sat with us and watched.

I believe in angels. I don't know that we have assigned angels to watch out for us or help us, but I believe they are often near and we rarely get to know it. Today I am thankful for whatever "guardian angels" had a hand in my sons' protection. How do you return that kind of favor?

I can do all things--the basketball miracle

I have a boy I love. Haha. I actually have five of them. But one has a particularly tender spot in my heart. Don't tell the rest. They all have their spots too anyway. But, it's because he has natural talent and true humility (among other things). One of his first basketball games, he scored 22 points and we were not there to see it. For whatever reason, for years and by multiple coaches, he was overlooked. He and his older brother were pine brothers. I cannot begin to understand it. I felt he was as good as any player out there, he just needed the opportunity. This boy also has a tendency to not believe in himself. For years I have tried to nurture a spirit of confidence in him and slowly it has paid off, but on occasion he slips into the, "I'm dumb, poor me" mode and I ache that he cannot see his own fabulousness. Is that a word?

A couple of years ago, I introduced him to THE SECRET. We watched it a few times as a family and taught them all the power of our thought. I taught them that in the scriptures, it is called the Law of the Harvest. He took to that. And he began planting little seeds of greatness. His senior year his big break came. We had a new principal in town, the basketball coach "retired" quite suddenly. And our principal became the coach. He had a pretty great basketball career himself. He took one look at my boy and he saw it. Chris became his go to player. At first it unnerved him completely. He did not have the experience of some of the other players on the team. But the coach saw it. And he began to nurture it too.

The other day my son told me that at every game during the national anthem, he would say in his mind, "I am strong. I am confident." And most of the time he played that way. He was instrumental in several games. He had big plays at big moments. He had a season we always knew he could have and we always wished he would have. They finished second in the state and we were so happy with how his senior year ended with sports. We were so grateful to a coach who finally took what he had and made him better.

Fast forward. The boy is now in college. For all intents and purposes he has one year of playing experience. Sure he practiced for seven years. More importantly he lived success in his mind. Always shadow shooting, imagining big plays, seeing himself as a player in his imagination. He signed up for Institute basketball and a few weeks into the semester signed up for an EAC basketball class run by the assistant coaches. Oh, this is a good idea, I tell him. He plays his Institute games every week and is having a blast. And he is having tons of fun in the class. Before he signed up, they all got to try out for the team. Oh well. A few weeks ago the assistant coaches ask him if he'd be interested in a spot on the team. Hmm, let me think a nanosecond. YES!!! Well, you won't be able to play, but you can travel and suit up and practice. OK, we're all just thrilled.

This week he has gone from, maybe we will consider something more for you in a few weeks, to several players being busted for illegal substances, to head coach asking him if he would be interested in suiting up. Hmmm, let me think for a nanosecond. Ok. No way! Why wasn't I trained in gymnastics so I could do some flips and roundoffs? They want him to play tomorrow, but the forms and permissions he needs, may not be filled out in time. So, we will see what happens. I am stunned.

A few weeks ago when he was home, he was not very positive about his studies, particularly math, and I shared with him Phill 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” I told him he needed to add "I am smart" to his other affirmations. Here's hoping he will have the same kind of turn around in his studies. As a mom, you hope for the dreams of your children to come true. If he never gets any farther in basketball than this, we will all just be extremely excited that it happened at all. It truly is a miracle what has occurred for him. I hope that as his confidence grows that he will be able to apply it in all areas of his life. It will sure come in handy when he leaves on a mission in a few months.

Joseph Coveney--infidel

Over the years I have been fascinated with my 4th/5th? great grandfather who came to America from Ireland. I found this today. I used to think he was just a strong minded individual. After all he is referred to in many places as a Free Thinker. Well, I like the message of the youtube video. I hope old Joseph is not extinct. :-)

Here are some of the words on the monument.

THE MORE PRIESTS
THE MORE POVERTY
THE MORE SAINTS
THE MORE HYPOCRITES
THE MORE RELIGION
THE MORE LYING

"He died as he had lived a disbeliever in the Bible God and the Christian religion."

FREE THOUGHT, FREE RELIGION, FREE SPEECH and FREE PRESS

"The world is my country. To do good my religion. "

"A word to the wise. God in the constitution is the end of liberty. Beware how you unite Church and State." (I strongly disagree with great grandpa here.)

"The Christian religion begins with a dream and ends with a murder." "All Christian denominations preach damnation to the others." "Remember Mary Dyer hanging on the big elm on the Boston Commons a victim to Christian superstition."

"Nature is the true god, Science the true religion."

In spite of all of that, he was well respected, generous, and a citizen of high regard in the community. He lived to be 92. Too bad he didn't change his mind as his children implored him on his death bed. And obviously it would have been better had he had a higher regard from his Creator.

Last, last, last--so blessed

I feel like I am in exact reverse of when this boy came in to my life. First time rolling over, first crawl, first solid food, first steps, first words. Now we are down to hours. Last weekend together. Last time at church together. Last picnic. Last family prayer, last dinner, last FHE. He is officially a missionary. He now has to live as close to mission rules as possible. We are his companions. :-) I thought it quite rude that the Stake Pres asked me to pray before they set him apart. I have been mostly fine with only a few moments of tears, but that made it awfully tough.

This day has been better than I could ever have imagined. We had a nice breakfast. We got to church early. The program was beautiful. I did not have to pray in sacrament meeting, but I did sing with three other ladies and I did not cry. Woohoo! All of the talks were beautiful and timely, charity, missionary work, the Savior. The Young Women sang Come Unto Christ. We sang Write Thy Name Upon My Heart. Andrew gave as beautiful a talk on the Savior as I have ever heard. He spoke for fifteen minutes and he has his dad's gift. Only he has it at a much younger age.

I came home and threw food together for about 20 of his friends and went back to the church for RS. Great lesson on Second Coming. Back home for more food for 20 family members and friends. Stake Pres called. Let's set him apart now. Off we go. Beautiful advice and it ended up being just us, him and his two oldest brothers. An aunt and uncle were going to come. In the rush we did not invite Grandma. She had gone home. We were going to ask in the friends/girlfriend outside, but he was reluctant so we did not. And I am so glad it was just our little intimate group. He told us and promised us wonderful things.

I feel so blessed that I cannot even express it in words. My heart is filled with joy. How could life be any better? The next few hours will be tender and I am sure there will be a point of major bawling, but it will be with the knowledge that it is a sweet parting and the reunion will be all the more joyful.

We are all writing our own letters to him to give him to read on the plane. We only have 16 hours left together, so I am going to make the best of it.
